We’ll walk you through a complete MT-supported project and highlight the steps that involve various project stakeholders (project manager, language engineer, translator, reviewer). You will participate in a group project as translators and reviewers to gain first-hand experience of working with MT in memoQ. You will also be introduced to custom neural translation to see the difference it makes in translation quality.

Next to videos, games localization is another field that is booming recently. Games companies sometimes start localization while devs are working on the code, still; it would be otherwise challenging (if not impossible) to release a game - in many languages - in time. This session will show how memoQ can be used for multilingual projects, with special emphasis on games localization-related features.

This presentation will set a framework for a discussion of both human translation and Artificial Intelligence that will make it easier to understand how the two can co-exist. It will then give practical suggestions on how to approach AI’s growing influence in our professional lives and highlight translation as one of the oldest and most enduring activities and professions.

 

Jost Zetzsche - International Writers' Group Jost Zetzsche is a translation industry and translation technology consultant, an author on various aspects of translation, and an ATA-certified English-to-German technical translator. 1999 Jost co-founded International Writers' Group, LLC, on the Oregon coast. Originally from Hamburg, Germany, he earned a Ph.D. in the field of Chinese translation history and linguistics at the University of Hamburg. The Translator's Tool Box, his computer guide for translators is now in its thirteenth edition, and his technical journal for the translation industry goes out to more than 11,000 translation professionals. In 2012, Penguin published his co-authored Found in Translation, a book about translation and interpretation for the general public. He sits on the editorial board for MultiLingual Magazine, the ATA Chronicle and the Journal of Internationalisation and Localisation. In 2018 he was awarded with an honorary membership to the ATA. Like all software applications, memoQ has a lot of functionalities – some of them very well hidden.

We usually only use about 20% of the tools that we have on our computers. This is a shame as there are some features that could be really helpful, but they are so well hidden or named in such a way that they are not readily recognized for their actual value.

This presentation aims to bring some of these settings to light, like

  • being able to close all open documents with one click
  • running a search and replace action on documents in the documents list, without opening them
  • locking segments that have a language different to the source language of the project
  • creating a project report across several online projects
  • creating TMs with metadata fields through the TM scheme
  • finding out what the pink matches mean and where to set if you want to see them at all, and...

Angelika Zerfass - zaac Angelika is based in Bonn, Germany and started out with a degree in translation for Chinese and Japanese, but soon found herself drawn more to the technical side. Juliet Macan - freelance consultant and trainer For many years a freelance IT-EN-GB translator in Italy, and a member of AITI. Gained experience with CAT tools: IBM Translation Manager, Trados and DejaVu, Star Transit, SLDx, Multitrans, memoQ, across, XTM, ONTRAM and Matecat. She also investigated the Quality Assurance functions of these tools in comparison with stand-alone QA tools such as Error Spy, QA Distiller and ApSIC XBench. Over the last decade she has lectured at several Italian universities, given presentations at numerous conferences throughout Europe and held workshops on translation tools and QA procedures and technology for language technology specialists, project managers and translators across Europe. Vice president of AsLing (Association internationale pour la promotion des technologies linguistiques), that promotes the development, knowledge and use of translation technology in the academic sector, large international organizations and amongst translators. A look at MT from a different angle: Given the choice, what do translators actually do when offered MT? And do their choice reflect the quality as measured via Edit Distance?

At Alpha we have conducted a large scale analysis of the actual use and quality of Machine Translation across clients from different domains (IT, Fashion, Automotive) and in more than 25 languages.
We use standard NMT engines from Google and deepL, and let the translators decide if and when they want to use the MT.
MT is presented in the grid in memoQ when there is no TM match better than 75%. But we have also set the Minimum threshold for showing TM hits to 60%, so translators have a choice between a low fuzzy match, a MT suggestion and translating from scratch (which would be the default if no MT is offered and threshold is set to 75%).

We have collected thousands of Edit distance reports (ED) from memoQ for selected clients and languages and analysed (amongst other things):

  • How big is the utilisation, i.e. the amount of words and segments where MT was actually used as a percentage of the number of words/segments available (all below 75% fuzzy)?
  • What does ED tell us about the quality for different domains and languages?
  • Given the choice between a low fuzzy and MT, what do translators chose if any?
  • What is the difference in ED between a low fuzzy (50-74%) and a selected MT suggestion?

Steen Kesmodel - Alpha I currently work as Operations Research Manager and Head of Translation at Alpha in Cambridge, where I started working as a translator 20 years ago. I hold degrees in philosophy and comparative literature, and before becoming a full-time translator I was a chef and had a catering company in New Zealand (highlight: cooking for the All Blacks’ annual gala dinner) and teaching literature part time at Auckland University. At Alpha I helped introduce and deploy several memoQ servers and spend most of my working hours supporting translators and PMs, automating workflows, working with a programmer to make bespoke tools and plug-ins using the API and battling against Default settings in projects in general and QA and LQA in particular.

In “The memoQ & MT Talk Show” Product Owner Zsolt Varga played the role of a talk show host and interviewed three key members of memoQ Ltd. about machine translation. Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board Balázs Kis provided an overview of the various kinds of MT services currently available, MT’s current role in the language industry and the change MT has brought into the lives of language services professionals. Head of Sales & Marketing Brúnó Bitter talked about MT’s role in the company’s business strategy at the present and in the future. Co-Founder and Head of Innovation at memoQ Gábor Ugray outlined the current trends in machine translation, their potential impacts on the language industry, and how industry players can prepare for these future changes.

This past year we have been working diligently to add value to the tools you are using, and in this presentation we are showing you the new functionality and improvements to memoQ since version 8.5. We show what has happened to the memoQWeb PM, how much easier it is to import files and to work with different memoQ versions, and also all the larger and smaller improvements around terminology, machine translation and the APIs.

We are living exciting times where content is transformed from written text into audio-visual format. Large enterprises create short educational videos instead of writing extensive manuals, media companies produce content that needs to be translated into 30+ language within 24 hours - or even less than that...

Translation of large Excel documents has always represented a challenge for CAT tools, especially when the document contains a long list of product names, labels, and descriptions, where most of the content appears in form of strings or terms, with little or no context.

The similarities in individual document lines are often not seen in CAT analysis because of the length of segments and inconsistencies in the source. The aim of this project was to translate certain part of above-mentioned type of Excel document consistently into a target language that contains six grammatical cases and three genders, opposed to the source language, which has no grammatical cases, and genders. Having that in mind but both trying to make some benefit out of a big amount of repetitions and including more than one translator to work on the project, all in order to meet the short deadline, required a smart selection of appropriate CAT tool.

In order to overcome those challenges, we decided to use everything that memoQ had to offer – segmentation rules editing, document slicing, and various pre-translate options.

Nikolina Skof - Quality Assurance Team Lead, Ciklopea Nikolina Škof is a Quality Assurance Team Lead at Ciklopea, an industry-focused provider of linguistic solutions, based in Zagreb, Croatia. She is responsible for coordinating and supervising other team members, working on quality assurance, technical pre-processing of documents for translation and post-processing of translated documents, as well as providing assistance on a technical level. Nikolina has been working in the translation industry for more than two years and has a vast experience in working with CAT and QA tools. She aims to make the most out of the benefits the technology offers in translation projects and she is very detail-oriented in her work.

In 2013, I was presenting at memoQfest on benefits of terminology management in a unified terminology management system. Since that time, technology landscape has changed. We now have more than 30 terminology management systems to choose from. To help many companies out there with this choice, at Nimdzi we have investigated most of the solutions present. As a result, we published a report on the state of terminology management, and I will be gladly sharing our key findings with memoQfest attendees.

We have also launched an interactive comparison page https://www.nimdzi.com/tbs which will be listing up to 30 tools in May-2019. We are constantly adding more valuable comparison criteria to this page, as per the requests from both the enterprise and LSP sides.

Yulia Akhulkova - Nimdzi, Data Scientist // ITI, Head of l10n Yulia Akhulkova graduated from Moscow University of Electronic Engineering as a software engineer. Since 2010 she has worked in localization combining strategic, control and marketing functions. Yulia’s experience in language services together with the urge to popularize the localization industry itself help her manage a l10n department in ITI, as well as contribute to Nimdzi’s research and analysis. She is a regularly invited speaker at several international conferences and in local universities.

Dominique Trouche - CEO, WhP A graduate of the Ecole Centrale de Paris, Dominique is CEO of WhP since 2005. Before joining WhP, Dominique managed several multinational operations in Europe, the US and South America. Based in Montreal, Dominique strives to make localization rhyme with innovation. His passion for DITA has led him to position WhP as a specialist in DITA localization to help customers enhance multilingual DITA content generation. The company has designed advanced solutions that bridge the gap between DITA and localization processes, leveraging content reuse and collaborative linguistic review. Dominique is an active member of the DITA community, both on and offline and a fervent long distance cyclist.

The presentation will show how terminology can be extracted from documents with and without the term extraction feature and which benefits both methods have.

In addition, the presenter will share her experience on useful settings and processes with term extractions from English or German, how to estimate the amount of terms that can be found and how to calculate the amount of time that might be needed.

With the recent boom in NMT, more and more companies consider it a way to reduce their translation costs. But is it really a holy grail? Is it finally time to deploy MT into production? Is it worth maintaining an MT engine at all? What are the actual savings? How can discounts be justified? I’m afraid there are no one-size-fits-all answers to these questions, as they may differ for each and every environment. Instead, the goal of my presentation is to demonstrate how memoQ can support a data-driven MT-based program by enabling human evaluations, providing a wealth of data, producing relevant statistics, enhancing long-term quality tracking and influencing MT deployment decisions.

Miklós Urbán - Senior Solution Architect, RWS Moravia Miklós is an industry expert and renowned for his knowledge of memoQ based localization systems. He has experience in many roles including operations and production manager of translation agencies as well as manager of professional services at memoQ. Currently, he works for RWS Moravia as senior solutions architect and provides support for the localization solutions of some major localization buyers. His primary focus nowadays is utilizing NMT and AI in translation workflows.

This presentation will demonstrate how Comunica.dk. Translations S.L., a relatively small LSP with memoQServer, has become a successful vendor for an enterprise client, who works with SDL WorldServer, Trados Studio and MultiTerm.

Lone Beheshty - Project Manager and CAT tools Trainer Lone has been working as a Project Manager and CAT tools Trainer at Comunica.dk Translations since June 2017. Although born in Denmark, Lone has lived most of her adult life in the UK. She studied Computational Linguistics and Modern Languages (German/Spanish) at UMIST in Manchester. For 24 years, she worked concurrently as a professional translator (MITI) and a certified Trados and memoQ Trainer.

Audit and especially certification audit has a bad reputation in the localization industry. The ISO 17100 is relatively new compared to the more widely applied general ISO 9001. Since localization as a service was a ‘late bloomer’ in ISO, the lack of experience combined with the growing pressure of customers challenges LSPs of every size and the lack of auditors experienced in localization environment often deprive the industry of the added value a properly conducted audit procedure can and should bring to the table.

My primary purpose is to show the audience their current ISO audit options and their possible integration in order to reduce the time and capacity they must assign to auditing; why NOT to fear the audit and the auditor; how memoQ server options cover some of the ISO documentation requirements ‘by themselves’ and how to include them in the quality management handbook; and give the audience some ideas through practical examples how they can ‘lean’ their audit processes with a conscious approach to their memoQ server maintenance.

The memoQ multilingual processing is simple and quite efficient when working with basic documents that must all be translated into the same target languages. But, complex multilingual projects require optimization to remain efficient.
We have identified 3 elements that can complicate multilingual projects.

1. Post-import file preparation
When documents require post-import preparation before assigning them to the translators (correcting poor segmentation from a PDF, locking rows of text that should not be translated, processing repetitions of similar content, applying regular expressions to protect specific keywords, adding global comments and instructions for all translators, etc.)

2. Mix of source documents per target
When some target languages do not need all documents or require alternative versions of the source materials. For example, when a product is distributed with different options in each target market.

3. Frequent updates
When contents and documents are changing rapidly, sometimes before the previous version has been fully translated. Updating the source of an on-going project is challenging when several translation teams are working concurrently in a multilingual project.

Our presentation will explain some of the solutions that we use to optimize our workflow and to turn these challenges into “efficiency boosters”.

Patricia Guyot & Jean-Marie Guyot - Operations Manager // General Manager, KEVRENN During my 25+ years of experience in language solutions, I have always been looking for ways to simplify my work. This may just come from my original training. Although I studied industrial process automation, I discovered software localization when I moved to California shortly after graduating. I worked for a few years as an ad’hoc translator and localization engineer before starting my own translation agency in San Jose. In 1997, our family moved back to France and I started Kevrenn with my wife Patricia. I manage the technical issues while Patricia runs the business operations. As we specialize in multilingual localization projects, we have continuously used CAT tools. Over the years we have seen them evolve and become more efficient. But there are always some specific features that we are missing for our needs. We work with complicated projects and we always try to optimize our workflow to remain efficient.

This is a case study of our alignment project using memoQ. Our dear customer requested a huge alignment work. Total of over million words, 309636 segments consists of 4370 Excel spreadsheets files created by a web crawler. The client needed these files to be processed within two weeks.

At first, it thought to be quite challenging. But it turned out to be a lot easier because of memoQ's auto alignment.
This is all thanks to memoQ platform, allowing us to achieve such demanding project successfully and lead to a happy ending. The customer is very happy to have accurate TM / large corpus for future use.

As we designed the model using the modern technology in order to improve the human performance, it can be used in numerous and various fields as real time support for consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, training, access for people living with reduced hearing, transcription and more.

Katalin Hajós - CEO, A Lex Expert Katalin Hajós, CEO of A Lex Expert Ltd, also works as a conference interpreter for more than 20 years. During her work she has to face daily stress linked to several working and personal conditions. She considers herself as one of the luckiest amongst the professional interpreters to take part of a very exciting innovation project: the development of the tool CASSIS which can seriously change interpreters stress load and assignment preparation’s workload, as well as the real time information exchange linked to interpretation assignments. She has a Literature PhD, has worked for many years in metal transformation industry, film industry and performances, but returned every time to her beloved language industry.

We all know this scenario in one way or another: there is this new customer who used to work with different LSPs before. Said customer provides you with a pile of antique TMs in all possible language pairs hoping you can make something out of this collection.

But can we? How to tackle such large amounts of resources? How can we structure them and benefit from functionalities provided in memoQ? And can we even make further use other than the obvious one? What if a new source language does not yet exist in the resources – can we generate useful TM content from what we already have?
